Where to Have a Picnic Around Charleston
We set up picnics across the Lowcountry most weeks of the year, which means we've learned which spots are worth the drive, which get impossibly crowded, and which are lovely at six in the evening and miserable at noon.
Here's what we've learned. No rankings — the right spot depends entirely on what you're doing.
Beaches
Charleston's beaches are the obvious choice and they earn it, particularly in the shoulder seasons when the heat lets up.
What to think about: sand is harder to set up on than it looks, and wind is the real enemy — it will take a tablecloth and a stack of napkins with it. Low tide gives you far more usable space. Shade is scarce, so an umbrella isn't decorative in July, it's essential.
Best for: proposals, anniversaries, sunset dinners for two.
Worth knowing: county beach parks charge parking, fill early on summer weekends, and have their own rules. Some activities need written approval from park management, so it's worth confirming before you plan around a specific beach. Charleston County Parks can be reached on 843-795-4386.
Waterfront and city parks
Charleston's waterfront parks give you the view without the sand, and they're far easier to reach — which matters if you have older guests, small children, or a lot to carry.
What to think about: more foot traffic, so less private. Grass is much easier to style on than sand and stays cleaner.
Best for: small group gatherings, birthdays, showers, anything with grandparents.
Gardens and green spaces
The Lowcountry does gardens exceptionally well, and mature trees give you something beaches can't: shade, and a sense of enclosure that makes a setup feel private even in a public space.
Best for: bridal showers, milestone birthdays, long lunches nobody wants to end.
Worth knowing: many gardens are privately run with their own event policies and fees. Check before you fall in love with a spot.
Summerville
Often overlooked in favour of downtown, which is exactly why it's worth considering. Quieter, greener, easier parking, and far less competition for the good spots on a Saturday.
Best for: family gatherings, kids' parties, anyone who'd rather not deal with downtown.
Backyards and rented properties
The most underrated option we set up in.
No permits, no parking, no strangers, no time limit. You control the music, the guest list and how late it runs. Rented houses and vacation properties work beautifully too — check with the host first.
Best for: kids' birthday parties, anything with a lot of guests, anything running past dark.
A few practical things
Go at the right hour. Between May and September, midday is genuinely unpleasant. Late afternoon into evening is better for comfort and immeasurably better for photographs.
Check the tide for anything beach-based.
Have a wet-weather plan. Lowcountry storms arrive fast and leave fast.
Confirm the rules before you commit. Public parks vary widely on what's permitted for setups, tents and commercial services.
Bugs are real. Near marsh or water, at dusk, you'll want repellent.
If you'd rather not carry any of it
That's what we do. We bring the table, linens, cushions, umbrellas, place settings and styling to any of these, set it up before you arrive and pack it down after. We handle permissions for your location as part of booking.
